Creative Resilient Youth’s “Roots Before Branches”
Showcasing works of art created during months of remote virtual collaborations, The Young Artist Program (YAP) and Creative Resilient Youth (CRY) will host the exhibition Roots Before Branches from June 4 through 27 at Cherry Street Pier.
Roots Before Branches will feature artwork from young artists who celebrate self-expression, vulnerability, and lived experience while navigating mental health challenges, abuse, bullying, racism, and other forms of oppression.
The collaborative works are the culmination of a year-long study on Afrofuturism, world-building, and traditions of youth artist activism. The work imagines inclusive multi-generational futures filled with wellness, safety, care, and joy, inviting conversations about what it means to organize, find shared language with others, and represent collective realities and nuanced approaches to social justice by and for young people.
