Philadelphia Contemporary Present’s Jean Shin: “Freshwater”
“Freshwater” is a new commission by the artist Jean Shin that celebrates and pays tribute to the freshwater river mussel while asking us to consider our responsibilities towards the health of the river and its ecosystem.
Featuring a public fountain that doubles as a living laboratory and sculptures that draw on the luxurious appeal of mussel shells, “Freshwater” invites viewers to consider the sight of living mussels with wonder, while also reflecting on the histories of industrial consumption and excess that caused mussel populations to decline across the United States.
