2024
Location: Cherry Street Pier
Time: Pier Operating Hours

Don’t miss resident artist Caroline Stoughton’s (Studio 12) “Under a Little Leaf,” which features 35 mixed-media, marker, ink, and oil pastel drawings on paper. This exciting new exhibition will be on display at Cherry Street Pier from August 2 to August 31.

Don’t miss a special opening reception on First Friday, August 2, from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Stoughton delves into the subtle complexities often overlooked in nature’s foliage: leaves. Through hours of study and exploration of their colors, lines, folds, and shapes, Stoughton developed a special affection for the quiet complexities of leaves, often overshadowed by the vibrant flowers that stem from and around them.

In “Under a Little Leaf,” Stoughton elevates these botanical elements to the forefront of artistic inquiry. Particular emphasis is placed on the coleus and petra croton plants, as seen in Chutes and Ladders (2020), as subjects that first captivated Stoughton during the solitude of the 2020 quarantine period.

During the quarantine, Stoughton collected endless inspiration from these plants’ variegated hues and transformative shapes, translating their movement and character into drawings and laying the groundwork for future paintings.
