“Island:” A Free Performance part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival
Join us for ”Island,” a free dance performance of the 2024 Philadelphia Fringe Festival on September 26 and September 27 at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and all ages are welcome.
In “Island,” Cherry Street Pier serves as both backdrop and participant in a public performance. Dancers permeate the boundary between observer and performer, embodying their environment’s spontaneity. An immersive interplay between architecture and movement infuses the mundane with the extraordinary, inviting audiences to witness the beauty of our everyday spaces and the social and biological impact them.
With human form as a living bridge between constructed realms of urban landscapes and the evocations of our natural world, this work underscores built architecture as immersive art spaces and interlopers of nature. “Island” moves us into a state of reciprocity and fertilization, offering the dance to the earth while moving from within the paradox of destruction and creation. Through movement, dancers engage with a range of Philadelphia architecture as a catalyst for generating and building danced connections with one another. Likewise, artists source the naturally occurring designs and geometry of water, plants, root systems, and soil, connecting built and natural landscapes to the nuanced construction of human relationships.
While The Pier is outdoors, it is a covered breezeway enabling ”Island” to perform rain or shine. Limited chairs are available. The audience will be guided through the length of the Pier, following “Island” as it travels from the entrance toward the Delaware River.
“Island” is created by Tammy Carrasco with Megan Bridge and Chloe Marie. Visit tammycarrasco.org to learn more.
